Never Gonna Let You Down

Last year, Natasha, Brian, Julia and I were shooting the breeze before a Your Phone Co. show at the Washington Improv Theater and got on the subject of things we thought we had invented when we were younger (the side pony-tail, the word “sike,” mastrubation, etc.)  It was a hilarious conversation, and one that bears even more significance now that it turns out Brian may have carried out the very first Rickroll in history.

If you aren’t familiar with the internet meme “Rickrolling,” it can be explained in detail here.  Actually, that’s a lie - I just Rickrolled you.  Sorry, but I had to do that to illustrate the concept.  You see, when a reader clicks on a link seeking information pertinent to the subject at hand and then finds himself watching a YouTube video of Rick Astley performing his 1987 hit song “Never Gonna Give You Up” instead, he has been Rickrolled.

It seems the first Rickroll, though primitive, was just as baffling ten years ago as it is today.  Just ask any of the young comedians that witnessed the event at a comedy festival after-party.  A great description of Brian’s role can be found here.  No, I’m not Rickrolling you again.  Let it be known: I’m never going to tell a(nother) lie and hurt you.  I’m never gonna let you down.
